He was born in Piacenza as the son of a shipping manager. He intended to be marked, but left medical school and became interested in photography. In 1957 he worked as a window decorator at La Rinascente department store in Milan. From 1961–1970 Armani worked as a designer at the Nino Cerruti fashion house, later developing on his own. In 1974, with his partner, Sergio Galeotti (who died of AIDS in 1985), he founded a company under the name Giorgio Armani S.p.A., first dealing with men's fashion and since 1975 also women's fashion. He also created the Emporio Armani brand. He gained fame by sewing for many Hollywood celebrities, in particular Richard Gere in the movie American Gigolo (American Gigolo, 1980). In the early 1980s, Armani also produced perfumes. In 1996, Armani was one of the few designers involved in a corruption scandal outside of politicians. In 2001, he gave an interview in which when asked what had been his biggest failure in life, he said that he was "unable to stop his partner's time." In 2002, he became an honorary ambassador of UNHCR. Armani designed the top floors of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. These countries floors as a hotel. He designed several outfits for Lady Gaga.
