A token : A token is generally a series of numbers or characters that is secret and sometimes unique. Someone who is in possession of a correct token has most likely not guessed it and thus proves to have the token. This proof is used in two waysThe token is issued specifically to one person (or other entity) and serves as authentication. It gives the right to perform an action. The token then serves as authorization to perform an action. An example of a personal token is a pin (personal identification number), a series of four digits that a customer must remember and type at an ATM when withdrawing money or switching on the mobile phone to activate the SIM card. The ATM deduces from the data on the card who the customer should be, and checks the customer's identity by asking him for the pin code. An example of the second case is the so-called token ring network, where computers on a network are only allowed to transmit if they have the token. A precisely defined protocol ensures that under normal circumstances two machines never have the token.
